What events occured that caused John Lennon to be considered a national threat?
Lennon had a marijuana conviction in London. Under the Immigration %26amp; Nationality Act, that made him inadmissible in the United States. Of course, that wasn't the real reason why the government put him in deportation proceedings, but the cannabis conviction still furnished an adequate basis for it. After all, mob bosses have been put away for something as trivial as tax evasion (not to draw a parallel between Lennon and mob bosses).

If you think that the basis for the deportation proceedings was disingenuous, I think it's far more outrageous that Lennon eventually prevailed on the mere ground that he was John Lennon. This was one of those decisions which stand for the proposition that there are special laws for celebrities, academics, and "important" people. An unknown Joe Shmo with a drug conviction gets deported, but laws do not apply to pop stars. He's John-*******-Lennon and therefore he is above the law. I am sure the court that finally decided this thought itself very liberal-minded -- but its decision added to a collection of elitist precedents which justify selective law enforcement.
Reply:Strom Thurmond heard a rumor that Lennon was going to lead a protest march at the 1972 GOP convention. He sicced the FBI on him. But it wasn't true.
Reply:Probably the best information I can give you is included in the two source links I posted below.
