What events surrounded king tut's death?
Tutankhamun came to the throne at the close of what modern scholars often call the Amarna Era - a period during which King Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV) reigned. Akhenaten had moved the capital of Egypt to an entirely new city, Akhetaten, and banned the worship of all gods except for the Aten. After Akhenaten's death, Tutankhamun became king. He was very young, probably no older than 9, and so was to a degree under the control of adult regents who ruled in his name. He (or his regents) restored the cults of all the various gods of Egypt, especially Amun-Re and restored the temples at Thebes and Memphis. Essentially, Tutankhamun's early reign was one of restoration.

He died young - at age 18 or 19 - the cause of death is still unclear, though many people have speculated that he was murdered. Recent research has suggested that he may have died of a massive infection, likely gangrene, after suffering a broken leg. His vizier, Ay, became king immediately after him. Interestingly, there was apparently a plague in the broader Middle East at this time, based on information we have from texts written by the Hittites and other sources of information. A queen, probably Tutankhamun's widow, Ankhesenamun, wrote to the king of the Hittites asking him to send her a son to marry so that she would not have to marry a "commoner" (probably Ay). Unfortunately, by the time the Hittite king made a decision, it was too late. The son he sent died en route.
