What are common events that cause PTSD in soldiers?

My husband has been in the Marine Corp for 3 years. And I'm worried that he'll be deploying soon and what are some common events that cause post tramatic stress disorder PTSD. If these events include seeing a friend get shot or injured how often does that really happen?

What are common events that cause PTSD in soldiers?
Anything related to war, PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury are the most common things that soldiers are coming home with. Be postive with him, keep him focused on the positive, be a support structure and be prepared to deal with someone who's dealt with a lot when he gets home.
Reply:There's no one event that causes it but there is that one event that could be "the straw that broke the camels back".

PTSD is SO over "prescribed" these days. I'm not sure how people get it that have never been shot at or left the base... but apparently it happens. Personally I think there are a lot of people out there looking for a free ride and "bragging" rights over it... but that's me.

Visit the VA.gov website and perhaps talk to a VA rep about it... get the low-down on it and be prepared to diagnose it upon his return. Don't get paranoid about it and see signs that really aren't there... some people just come back pissed off... it doesn't mean they have PTSD.
Reply:If he is strong and believes in his cause he most likely will not get PTSD. If by chance he does the military is waiting to help him. Getting shot at and the stress it causes may contribute to PTSD but again if he's real strong and has a sense of honor and duty "Plus" really believes in this war then he will come home as a normal honorable man.
Reply:PTSD can come from any Traumatic event hence the name. It is not limited to being a wartime phenomenon.
Reply:It starts when they see another recruit like themselves get set on fire while asleep in boot camp! It's reinforced when they see other soldiers like themselves become injured or worse outright killed in country! It grows and worsens because the military fails completely to identify and /or treat these people in a timely manner! They have no reason to do so, since it's not in their interest to do so!
