Events that have influenced gay rights and gay rights activism?
The Stonewall riots were a series of violent conflicts between New York City police officers and groups of gay and transgender people that began on June 28, 1969, and lasted for several days.

Stonewall was a watershed for the worldwide gay rights movement, as gay and transgender people had never before acted together in such large numbers to forcibly resist police harassment directed towards their community.

Three years before the famous rioting at New York's Stonewall Inn , there was a riot in San Francisco at Gene Compton's Cafeteria .

The Compton's Cafeteria Riot occurred in August 1966 in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. This incident was the first recorded transgender riot in United States history.

In the aftermath of the riot at Compton's, a network of transgender social, psychological, and medical support services was established, which culminated in 1968 with the creation of the National Transsexual Counseling Unit, the first such peer-run support and advocacy organization in the world.
Reply:Stonewall Jackson?? the Civil war general was gay??/....cool
Reply:The 1969 riot was named after the Stonewall Inn , a small mafia run bar w a gay and lesbian clientele . In those days all big city gay bars were regularly raided by sometimes violent police squads who sought cash payoffs to not make raids for awhile . On this particular night , the patrons and others nearby fought the police for several hours . Better conditions for gays and less harrassment soon followed . Both the gay community and the police dept learned something that nite .
