can an olympic athlete only compete in one event or can they compete in multiple events or can they compete in two different types, like swimming and running
How many events can an olympic athlete compete in?
Yes they can as long as they qualify, but it's very rare. You see many of the athletes are so involved in one sport it's very unlikely they could crossover. Being able to coordinate the time for the different sports would be a logistical nightmare.
If athletes do more then one event it's often different disciplines in the same sport. For example Phelps did the butterfly, freestyle, and individual medley. In Athletics you had people like Carl Lewis who competed in 100m, 200m, Long Jump, and the relay. Jackie Joyner- Kersee not only competed in the heptathlon, but she also competed in the long jump as a separate event.
1924 Johnny Weissmuller did compete in 2 separate sports swimming and water polo. Even that is technically both under the sport of Aquatics. 1988 Christia Luding won Winter and Summer medals in the same year-speed skating and cycling.
In 1896 Carl Schumann competed and won medals in Gymnastics and Greco-Roman Wrestling. He also competed in long jump, triple jump, shot put, and weightlifting. Of course back then it wasn't so hard to compete in multiple events.
Reply:They can compete in as many events where they can qualify. They can also compete in different sports. There is no rule that limits how many they can do.
